Modifications of circular cylinder surfaces, such as strakes and helical wires, effectively mitigate Kármán vortex-induced vibrations normal to flow and have been applied to the reduction of large-amplitude vibrations of stay cables in bridges, which occur under wind oblique to a cable with or without rainfall. This aerodynamic control method cannot be fully effective without understanding the behavior of the flow around and the associated forces on oblique cables. To address this issue, flow around a yawed cylinder with various strake patterns was studied using three-dimensional detached eddy simulation (DES) at Reynolds number of 1.4×105. Results demonstrated that strake patterns strongly influence the development of flow structures around a yawed cylinder and therefore the associated forces on the cylinder. The results suggest that particular strake patterns can mitigate large-amplitude and low-frequency vibrations of stay cables induced by oblique wind.  相似文献

Despite its theoretical importance, personal goal motivation has rarely been examined in clinical depression. Here we investigate whether clinically depressed persons (n = 23) differ from never-depressed persons (n = 26) on number of freely generated approach and avoidance goals, appraisals of these goals, and reasons why these goals would and would not be achieved. Participants listed approach and avoidance goals separately and generated explanations for why they would (pro) and would not (con) achieve their most important approach and avoidance goals, before rating the importance, likelihood, and perceived control of goal outcomes. Counter to hypothesis, depressed persons did not differ from never-depressed controls on number of approach or avoidance goals, or on the perceived importance of these goals. However, compared to never-depressed controls, depressed individuals gave lower likelihood judgments for desirable approach goal outcomes, tended to give higher likelihood judgments for undesirable to-be-avoided goal outcomes, and gave lower ratings of their control over goal outcomes. Furthermore, although controls generated significantly more pro than con reasons for goal achievement, depressed participants did not. These results suggest that depressed persons do not lack valued goals but are more pessimistic about their likelihood, controllability, and reasons for successful goal attainment. Opiate dependence (OD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), separately and together, are significant public health problems with poor treatment outcomes. BPD is associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, and brain-imaging studies in BPD individuals indicate differential activation in prefrontal cingulate cortices and their interactions with limbic regions. Likewise, a similar network is implicated in drug cue responsivity in substance abusers. The present, preliminary study used functional MRI to examine activation of this network in comorbid OD/BPD participants when engaged in an “oddball” task that required attention to a target in the context of emotionally negative distractors. Twelve male OD/BPD participants and 12 male healthy controls participated. All OD/BPD participants were taking the opiate replacement medication Suboxone, and a subset of participants was positive for substances of abuse on scan day. Relative to controls, OD/BPD participants demonstrated reduced activation to negative stimuli in the amygdala and anterior cingulate. Unlike previous studies that demonstrated hyperresponsivity in neural regions associated with affective processing in individuals with BPD versus healthy controls, comorbid OD/BPD participants were hyporesponsive to emotional cues. Future studies that also include BPD-only and OD-only groups are necessary to help clarify the individual and potentially synergistic effects of these two conditions. Full-flow penetrometers (the T-bar and ball) are increasingly used on sites with thick deposits of soft clays, particularly prevalent offshore. Full-flow penetration tests were performed at five international well-characterized soft clay test sites to assess the use of full-flow penetrometers to estimate undrained shear strength. Field vane shear data were used as the reference undrained strength. Statistical analyses of strength factors indicates that full-flow penetrometers provide an estimate of undrained shear strength at a similar level of reliability compared to the piezocone. Relationships for estimating the strength factor and soil sensitivity using only full-flow penetrometer data obtained during initial penetration and extraction are developed. A strong dependence of the strength factor on sensitivity was identified and can be used for the estimation of undrained strength. The effectiveness and use of the developed correlations are demonstrated through their application at an additional test site.  相似文献

Outer block interleaving and time transmission interval (TTI) are two interrelated parameters for the design of 3G systems. Particularly, they represent a critical issue for the implementation of UMTS turbo coding in flat Rayleigh fading channels. Thus, an efficient TTI choice can save computational complexity. In this paper different scenarios are investigated using the maximum UMTS frame length and simulation results are presented for the four possible outer block interleaver configurations in the case of flat Rayleigh fading channel. Considering frame error rate (FER) performance we propose a TTI of 80 ms for rural and urban/suburban outdoor operating environments for the majority of scenarios. For indoor/low range outdoor operating environment 20 ms is the proposed choice apart from low data rates.  相似文献

Recent insight into the molecular mechanisms of biological mineral formation (biomineralization) has enabled biomimetic approaches for the synthesis of functional organic‐inorganic hybrid materials under mild reaction conditions. Here we describe a novel method for enzyme immobilization in thin (nanoscale) conformal mineral coatings using biomimetic layer‐by‐layer (LbL) mineralization. The method utilizes a multifunctional molecule comprised of a naturally‐occurring peptide, protamine (PA), covalently bound to the redox enzyme Glucose oxidase (GOx). PA mimics the mineralizing properties of biomolecules involved in silica biomineralization in diatoms, and its covalent attachment to GOx does not interfere with the catalytic activity. Highly efficient and stable incorporation of this modified enzyme (GOx‐PA) into nanoscale layers (~5–7 nm thickness) of Ti‐O and Si‐O is accomplished during protamine‐enabled LbL mineralization on silica spheres. Depending on the layer location of the enzyme and the type of mineral (silica or titania) within which the enzyme is incorporated, the resulting multilayer biocatalytic hybrid materials exhibit between 20–100% of the activity of the free enzyme in solution. Analyses of kinetic properties (Vmax, KM) of the immobilized enzyme, coupled with characterization of physical properties of the mineral‐bearing layers (thickness, porosity, pore size distribution), indicates that the catalytic activities of the synthesized hybrid nanoscale coatings are largely determined by substrate diffusion rather than enzyme functionality. The GOx‐PA immobilized in these nanoscale layers is substantially stabilized against heat‐induced denaturation and largely protected from proteolytic attack. The method for enzyme immobilization described here enables, for the first time, the high yield immobilization and stabilization of enzymes within continuous, conformal, and nanoscale coatings through biomimetic LbL mineralization. This approach will likely be applicable to a wide variety of surfaces and functional biomolecules. The ability to synthesize thin (nanoscale) conformal enzyme‐loaded layers is of interest for numerous applications, including enzyme‐based biofuel cells and biosensors.  相似文献

Supported gold, palladium and gold–palladium catalysts have been used to oxidatively dehydrogenate cyclohexane and cyclohexenes to their aromatic counterpart. The supported metal nanoparticles decreased the activation temperature of the dehydrogenation reaction. We found that the order of reactivity was Pd ≥ Au–Pd > Au supported on TiO2. Attempts were made to lower the reaction temperature whilst retaining high selectivity. The space-time yield of benzene from cyclohexane at 473 K was determined to be 53.7 mol/kgcat/h rising to 87.3 mol/kgcat/h at 673 K for the Pd catalyst. Increasing the temperature in this case improved conversion at a detriment to the benzene selectivity. Oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexene over AuPd/TiO2 or Pd/TiO2 catalysts was found to be very effective (conversion >99% at 423 K). These results indicate that the first step in the reaction sequence of cyclohexane to cyclohexene is the slowest step. These initial results suggest that in a fixed-bed reactor the oxidative dehydrogenation in the presence of oxygen, palladium and gold–palladium catalysts are readily able to surpass current literature examples and with further modification should yield even higher performance.  相似文献

Smartphone sensing and persuasive feedback design is enabling a new generation of wellbeing apps capable of automatically monitoring multiple aspects of physical and mental health. In this article, we present BeWell+ the next generation of the BeWell smartphone wellbeing app, which monitors user behavior along three health dimensions, namely sleep, physical activity, and social interaction. BeWell promotes improved behavioral patterns via feedback rendered as an ambient display on the smartphone’s wallpaper. With BeWell+, we introduce new mechanisms to address key limitations of the original BeWell app; specifically, (1) community adaptive wellbeing feedback, which generalizes to diverse user communities (e.g., elderly, children) by promoting better behavior yet remains realistic to the user’s lifestyle; and, (2) wellbeing adaptive energy allocation, which prioritizes monitoring fidelity and feedback responsiveness on specific health dimensions (e.g., sleep) where the user needs additional help. We evaluate BeWell+ with a 27 person, 19 day field trial. Our findings show that not only can BeWell+ operate successfully on consumer smartphones; but also users understand feedback and respond by taking steps towards leading healthier lifestyles.  相似文献

Precise manipulation of water is a key step in numerous natural and synthetic processes. Here, a new flexible and transparent hierarchical structure is determined that allows ultra‐dexterous manipulation and lossless transfer of water droplets. A 3D nanomesh is fabricated in one step by scalable electrospinning of low‐cost polystyrene solutions. Optimal structures are composed of a mesh of dense nanofiber layers vertically separated by isolated mesoporous microbeads. This results in a highly adhesive superhydrophobic wetting that perfectly mimics rose petal‐like structures. Structural–functional correlations are obtained over all key process parameters enabling robust tailoring of the wetting properties from hydrophilic to lotus‐like Cassie‐Baxter and rose‐like Cassie‐impregnating states. A mechanistic model of the droplet adhesion and release dynamics is obtained alongside the first demonstration of a mechanically induced transfer of microdroplets between two superhydrophobic coatings. This low‐temperature reaction‐free material structure demonstrates a facile means to fabricate impenetrable residue‐less rose petal‐like surfaces with superhydrophobic contact angles of 152 ± 2° and effective adhesion strength of 113 ± 20 μN. This is a significant step toward parallel, multistep droplet manipulation with applications ranging from flexible on‐paper devices to microfluidics and portable/wearable biosensors.  相似文献

Cancer metastasis involves the dissemination of cancer cells from the primary tumour site and is responsible for the majority of solid tumour-related mortality. Screening of anti-metastasis drugs often includes functional assays that examine cancer cell invasion inside a three-dimensional hydrogel that mimics the extracellular matrix (ECM). Here, we built a mechanically tuneable collagen hydrogel model to recapitulate cancer spreading into heterogeneous tumour stroma and monitored the three-dimensional invasion of highly malignant breast cancer cells, MDA-MB-231. Migration assays were carried out in the presence and the absence of drugs affecting four typical molecular mechanisms involved in cell migration, as well as under five ECMs with different biophysical properties. Strikingly, the effects of the drugs were observed to vary strongly with matrix mechanics and microarchitecture, despite the little dependence of the inherent cancer cell migration on the ECM condition. Specifically, cytoskeletal contractility-targeting drugs reduced migration speed in sparse gels, whereas migration in dense gels was retarded effectively by inhibiting proteolysis. The results corroborate the ability of cancer cells to switch their multiple invasion mechanisms depending on ECM condition, thus suggesting the importance of factoring in the biophysical properties of the ECM in anti-metastasis drug screenings.  相似文献
